Gracie-May Portrait

& Fashion

Photographer

Gracie-May Newell is a portrait photographer based in Kent and London . Her practice involves personal projects alongside commercial work. Her personal work focuses on portraiture that portrays the theme of identity, focusing on  under represented communities including homeless people, twins and those with hidden disabilities.  Her perspectives are shaped by having a hidden disability herself. Her childhood experiences have importance in how she represents  communities that are stereotyped within society as she feels strongly that everyone should be treated the same. Collaboration is important within her practice as she believes that community engagement with the subjects is central for opening conversations within her collaborations.

In recent works it has become apparent how she can mix her personal projects through conceptual practice by incorporating fashion. Her portfolio displays a love for studio portrait photography.  Within her work the studio is a power tool enabling her to control  visual elements including lighting and set design in order to create visual story telling through her fashion imagery. For instance her photographs of children play with whimsical themes and story telling. Authorship within her commercial fashion photography is apparent through her threading of societal issues into fashion photography. In recent work she has explored  the impact of fast fashion on the environment further using photography as a way of voicing important issues.
